Sky Mirror is a collection of eight essays of advanced yet accessible commentary on astrology, often drawing from ancient and medieval writings on the planets, and considering these in the light of contemporary contexts. Most of these essays were given as lectures at the Astrological Lodge in London and published in The Mountain Astrologer magazine.
While we don’t know if, how, or why astrology “works”, it’s a fascinating arena in which to study human nature and human imagination. Astrology matters because across the globe, humanity has used planetary cycles to tell stories about who we are, to locate our experience in time and space, and to explore unfathomable variations of character and fate. And most curiously, we have for millennia conceived of the positions of the planets, the Sun, and the Moon, and of their cyclical geometric inter-relationships, as functional mirrors and illuminators of our own experience.
About the Author
Lara Owen has been interested in cultural lore, practices, and rituals surrounding cycles since her 20’s. She lectured on popular and esoteric conceptions of astronomical cycles in the USA, UK and France, and for many years ran a popular website, Planetary Energies, which integrated several cyclical traditions. She retired from this work in 2012 in order to focus exclusively on her longstanding work on the monthly cycle of menstruation and the life cycle transition of menopause.
“I love this book. These days, it’s not difficult to find an astrologer with impressive technical abilities. It’s a lot less common to find a gifted astrologer who can write really well and who gives the impression of being as interested in human beings as she is in planets and stars. In this collection of essays, Lara Owen ably demonstrates that she knows her astrology well and that she’s a wonderful writer. But better still, she presents astrology intelligently while never losing sight of what it has to offer mere mortals: an incomparable mirror that reflects human character and circumstance.”
